Letter from an evacuee as part of our WW2 topic

Dear Mother,
I’m fine thanks.  I really miss you.  I’m happy because me and my friend are living together.  It was a long trip.  We had to stop twice to get more children on board the train.

At the train station the public came in and out.  Then finally one of the public chose me.  Then they picked my best friend Heather.  We both like to do the same things.  After school we come home, put our school bags down and do our homework before playing.

My school is called Chockingham Primary School.  My teacher’s name is Mr Cronly.  He’s a nice teacher but still he’s got a big whip.  My pencil fell on the floor and I got ten hard whips on the hand.  After that we had to say the 9 times tables.  A boy called Alexander got an answer wrong and he gave him 25 whips!

Thanks for telling me that dad’s fine.  I hope the war ends so I can come home.  I hope Dad will be okay.  I do not want him to come home injured.  I wonder if dad flies the army planes?  He’s part of the British army.

In the countryside there have been 3 gas mask drills.  It’s not that scary as it was just a practice.  Then it was for real but no one got hurt – just some of the houses got destroyed.  Well I need to go now as my tea is ready.
